Four dolphins swim in curved arrangement around the effigy, a characteristic Syracusan motif referencing the freshwater spring of Arethusa on the island of Ortygia. The legend ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ (of the Syracusans) is inscribed in the field, and the engraver's signature ΕΥΑΙΝΕΤΟΣ (Euainetos) appears in abbreviated form near the truncation. The portrait is rendered with extraordinary naturalistic detail and subtlety of modelling, representing the pinnacle of Greek die-engraving art. |
