| Beschrijving keerzijde | Large, majestic head of Arethusa facing left in high relief, her elaborately curled and waved hair bound with a beaded headband and adorned with a reed crown; she wears a pendant earring of elongated drop form. Four dolphins swim in curved arrangement around the effigy, a characteristic Syracusan motif referencing the freshwater spring of Arethusa on the island of Ortygia. The legend ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ (of the Syracusans) is inscribed in the field, and the engraver's signature ΕΥΑΙΝΕΤΟΣ (Euainetos) appears in abbreviated form near the truncation. The portrait is rendered with extraordinary naturalistic detail and subtlety of modelling, representing the pinnacle of Greek die-engraving art. |
