Reverse description Magnificent facing head of the nymph Arethusa turned slightly to the left, rendered in exquisite high relief with elaborate, tightly curled hair bound by a beaded diadem and decorated with aquatic reeds. Four dolphins swim in a circular arrangement around the portrait in the field, symbolic of the freshwater spring of Arethusa on the island of Ortygia. The legend ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ (of the Syracusans) runs along the right periphery, with the engraver's signature KI (for Kimon) also present in the field.
