| Description du revers | A majestic facing-left portrait head of the nymph Arethusa, rendered in high relief with consummate artistry characteristic of the finest Syracusan die engravers; her hair is bound with a wreath of grain ears, and she wears a triple-pendant earring and a beaded necklace. The circular legend ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ (of the Syracusans) is arranged around the periphery, and four dolphins swim around the central device, symbolising the maritime environment of the island spring. A scallop shell appears behind the nymph's neck. |
