| Beschrijving keerzijde | A large, finely modelled head of the nymph Arethousa faces left, her hair secured beneath an ampyx and an open-weave sakkos, with loose locks flowing at the nape; she is adorned with a single-pendant earring and a necklace. The inscription ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ is disposed in two segments behind her hair, reading retrograde in the Doric Syracusan dialect. Four dolphins swim in the surrounding field, their arrangement encircling the portrait as emblems of Syracuse's coastal identity. The portrait exemplifies the high Classical style of Syracusan coinage, combining idealized beauty with meticulous attention to jewellery and textile detail. |
