Additional information

Enrique II came to power by murdering his half-brother Pedro I at Montiel in 1369 — one of the more nakedly dynastic killings of medieval Iberia. The cruzado issues from the earliest years of his reign were part of a broader effort to legitimize a usurper's rule through the machinery of coinage, flooding circulation with new types that displaced Pedro's money and established Trastámara authority in metal as well as fact.

AB#466 is among the earlier cruzado attributions for this reign. Billon quality varies considerably across Castilian mints of this period, with Córdoba issues occasionally showing irregular flan preparation consistent with a mint under administrative reorganization following the dynastic transition.
