The cotrim was a low-value billon piece introduced under Afonso V, whose reign was defined more by Moroccan campaigning than monetary policy — he earned the epithet "the African" through successive assaults on Ceuta, Alcácer Ceguer, and Arzila. Funding those campaigns required sustained fiscal pressure, and the debased silver content of coins like this one reflects decades of that strain.
