Obverse lettering MATHER & SHEFFERLY CROCKERY STORE 138 & 140 WOODWARD AVE. DETROIT
Reverse description The reverse features a left-facing draped bust of Liberty modeled after the Indian Head cent type, wearing a feathered headdress with the word LIBERTY inscribed on the headband. Thirteen stars are arranged in a ring around the effigy, referencing the original colonies. The date 1863 appears in the lower exergue beneath the bust. The overall design closely replicates the contemporary United States one-cent piece to facilitate its use as an emergency substitute during the coinage shortage of the Civil War period.
