Reverse description The Portuguese royal arms displayed in cross formation at the centre of the field: five escutcheons arranged in a quincunx pattern, each bearing five bezants (quinas), representing the traditional arms of Portugal. The escutcheons are rendered in the Gothic shield style typical of João III coinage. Above the shield arrangement, a partial crowned legend arch reads the king's abbreviated titulature. The field is enclosed within a raised inner circle, with a beaded or dotted border visible along the periphery of the irregularly shaped flan.
