| Beschrijving keerzijde | Central device displays the Portuguese royal arms comprising five escutcheons arranged in a quincunx pattern, each charged with five roundels (bezants), all set within a plain inner circle. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown and enclosed by a beaded border. The surrounding circular legend, struck in Latin, reads IN HOC SIGNO VINCES (In this sign thou shalt conquer), a motto of early Christian imperial origin adopted on Portuguese coinage. The overall execution is typical of mid-16th century hammered silver, with flat and somewhat crude relief consistent with the small module of this denomination. |
