Obverse description Central field displays the royal Gothic monogram 'IOHS' for Joannes (João II), surmounted by an elaborate crown rendered in the late medieval Portuguese style. Below the monogram appears the mint mark 'L' for Lisboa (Lisbon). The design is set within a beaded inner circle, with the peripheral Latin legend running clockwise around the coin's border. The striking is characteristic of late 15th-century Portuguese hammered coinage, with some weakness and irregularity typical of the technique.
