Obverse description A stylized castle with a complete wall and towers rises above wavy lines representing the sea, rendered in the characteristic crude hammered style of Portuguese ceitis. The castle features a central tower flanked by two smaller towers, all set upon a fortified base, with the waves occupying the lower portion of the field. A circular legend surrounds the central device, with lettering subject to numerous orthographic variations across dies. The overall design is contained within a circular border, typical of the ceitil coinage of João III.
