| Obverse description | Central device depicting a medieval castle with a high outer wall articulated by internal columns and lacking battlements along the wall-walk, flanked by two towers with battlements; the entire fortress is set above stylised waves rendered as horizontal undulating lines, evoking the sea and reflecting Portugal's maritime identity. The castle design is contained within a plain inner circle, with the field between the inner circle and the coin's edge bearing fragmentary uncial lettering.
