Obverse description Central device depicting a medieval castle with a high outer wall articulated by internal columns and lacking battlements along the wall-walk, flanked by two towers with battlements; the entire fortress is set above stylised waves rendered as horizontal undulating lines, evoking the sea and reflecting Portugal's maritime identity. The castle design is contained within a plain inner circle, with the field between the inner circle and the coin's edge bearing fragmentary uncial lettering. The strike, characteristic of hammered coinage, results in an irregular flan with uneven relief throughout.
