Cunobelin ruled the Catuvellauni and Trinovantes from his capital at Camulodunum — modern Colchester — for roughly four decades, making him the most powerful British king of the pre-Roman period. Shakespeare knew him as Cymbeline. The Roman writer Suetonius called him "king of the Britons," and his reign coincided almost exactly with the lifetime of Augustus, whose coinage almost certainly influenced the increasingly Romanized style of Cunobelin's own issues.
The pentagram type sits among his smaller bronze denominations, likely serving intra-tribal exchange rather than prestige transactions. His death, sometime around AD 40, removed the one figure capable of unifying British resistance — within two years, Claudius invaded.
