Additional information

Leo III seized the throne in March 717, just months before an Arab force of reportedly 80,000 men besieged Constantinople by land and sea. The tremissis — the smallest of the three standard Byzantine gold denominations — continued striking through the siege, which lasted until August 718. The Arab fleet was destroyed partly by Greek fire, and the failure of that campaign effectively ended Umayyad ambitions in the Aegean.

The "Cf." qualifiers in both Sear and MIB III signal that this piece doesn't fully conform to a catalogued type — a detail worth investigating before attribution is finalized.
