Reverse description Two standing imperial figures in full regalia face the viewer: at left, Christ Pantokrator in imperial loros and crown, holding a patriarchal cross-scepter; at right, Emperor Manuel I Komnenos in full military costume and jeweled crown, holding a labarum and an orb or sword. Christ places his right hand upon the emperor's shoulder in the traditional Byzantine investiture gesture, conferring divine authority. The imperial inscription ΜΑΝΟΥΗΛ ΔΕCΠΟΤΗC appears distributed through the field, identifying the emperor by name and title. The reverse design follows the standard Comnenian type of Christ crowning the emperor, executed in vigorous hammered relief on the scyphate flan.
