Obverse description The Virgin Orans (Theotokos) depicted enthroned facing, nimbate with a circular halo, seated upon a throne with ornate footstool, her arms raised in the orans position with hands outstretched. The Christ Child is shown as a medallion (clipeus) before her chest, also nimbate and facing. The Greek monogram MP-ΘV (Meter Theou, Mother of God) appears in the upper field to either side, flanking the figure. The composition is rendered in the characteristic Byzantine hieratic style with fine drapery folds visible on the scyphate concave fabric.
