| Obverse description | The civic badge of Chios, a sphinx seated to the left in the field, rendered in archaic Ionian style with outstretched forepaws and prominent wing. A bunch of grapes appears before the sphinx in the left field, a longstanding symbol associated with Chian wine production. The Greek legend ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΥ (of Augustus) arcs around the upper portion of the design, referencing the reigning emperor in the genitive case. The flan is irregularly struck, as is typical of provincial silver coinage of this period. |
