Reverse description The reverse bears a five-line Greek inscription filling the entire field within a beaded inner border and plain outer rim, reading LEON S COHST ANTIHEE COE ΘEΥ bA SILIS, identifying Leo III and his co-emperor Constantine V as rulers by divine appointment. The bold, slightly irregular letterforms are characteristic of the hammered miliaresion coinage of the Isaurian dynasty. No figurative imagery is present, in keeping with the Iconoclast policies of the period.
