Victorinus ruled the breakaway Gallic Empire for roughly two years before being murdered, most likely by one of his own officers — ancient sources suggest the killing was a personal rather than political affair, possibly over a wife. The PAX AVG type is grimly ironic: his reign saw near-continuous military pressure, and peace was never really his to advertise.
RIC V.2 #55 is among the more frequently encountered Victorinus types, struck primarily at Cologne. The billon content by this period had degraded sharply from earlier silver standards, part of the broader third-century monetary collapse that afflicted both the central Roman empire and its Gallic offshoot equally.
