Postumus founded the Gallic Empire in 260 AD after capturing — and deliberately not ransoming — Saloninus, the teenage son of Gallienus, effectively declaring his breakaway regime permanent through that act of execution. His coinage was unusually well-administered for a usurper, with the Lugdunum mint operating under tighter control than many contemporary Roman issues. The MONETA AVG reverse is a pointed statement: this was a regime asserting full monetary authority over its territory, which at its height included Gaul, Britannia, and Hispania.
The "var." notation against RCV III#10962 likely reflects a legend break or officina difference — Lugdunum ran multiple workshops simultaneously during Postumus's nine-year reign.
