| Obverse description | Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Marius facing right, rendered in the late Roman provincial style characteristic of the Gallic Empire mint at Treveri. The emperor's effigy displays a radiate crown with boldly rendered spikes, a short beard, and military paludamentum fastened at the shoulder. The surrounding Latin legend reads IMP C MARIVS P F AVG, distributed around the periphery of the flan. The portrait exhibits the sturdy, somewhat coarse engraving typical of Gallic Empire coinage of the brief reign of Marius in 269 AD. The irregular flan shows the hammered production method common to third-century Roman billon antoniniani. |
