Year 42 of Augustus's reign over Egypt — reckoned from 30 BC when Octavian took the province as personal imperial property rather than allowing it to pass to the Senate — places this issue squarely in the final months before his death in 14 AD. Egypt's mint at Alexandria operated on a closed currency system, meaning these bronzes circulated only within the province and were demonetized at the border, effectively making the Alexandrian coinage a captive monetary pool answerable solely to the emperor.
