Year 42 of Augustus's reign as reckoned by the Alexandrian calendar — the date encoded in the "L ΜΒ" — places this issue in 12/13 AD, just two years before his death. The Alexandria mint operated under Roman prefectural authority rather than senatorial control, making it one of the few provincial mints to strike explicitly dated bronze coinage throughout the Augustan period. Egyptian reckoning ran from the accession date rather than the Roman calendar, a distinction the Alexandrian mint maintained consistently and which makes precise dating of these bronzes unusually reliable.
