| Obverse description | Jugate busts of Augustus, laureate, and Livia, draped, to right, set within a circular field on this provincial bronze issue. The effigies are rendered in the Hellenistic portrait tradition characteristic of Ionian civic coinage of the Augustan period. The obverse legend ΣΕΒΑΣΤΩΙ ΖΜΥΡΝΑΙΟΙ, meaning 'of the Smyrnaeans, to the Sebastos (Augustus)', encircles the busts, affirming the civic dedication to the imperial couple. The portrait treatment reflects the close dynastic association between Augustus and Livia as promoted in the eastern provinces. |
