China's Panda gold bullion program, launched in 1982, made a significant structural change in 2016: the series abandoned its long-standing weight designations in troy ounces and converted entirely to metric grams, partly to distinguish the coins commercially in a market crowded with ounce-denominated bullion. The 50g piece sits at the top of the standard annual bullion lineup.
