Obverse description Within a beaded inner circle, the crowned royal shield of Norway displays the rampant lion passant guardant bearing a halved axe, facing left in characteristic medieval heraldic style. A continuous Latin legend encircles the shield between the inner beaded ring and an outer beaded border at the rim. The overall design reflects the hand-struck, irregularly shaped character typical of mid-sixteenth-century Scandinavian hammered coinage.
Obverse script Latin
Obverse lettering CHRISTIANVS 3 D G DANIE NOR
(Translation: Christian III, by Gods Grace, (King of), Denmark and Nor(way))
