Obverse description Central field bears the crowned Norwegian royal coat of arms, depicting a rampant lion holding an axe within a shield ornamented with a beaded border, surmounted by a royal crown with cross finial. A circular legend in Latin script surrounds the central device along the periphery, reading CARL XIV JOHAN NORGES SVER. G. OG V. KONGE, identifying the monarch as King of Norway, Sweden, the Goths and the Wends. The overall design is executed in a restrained neoclassical style characteristic of early nineteenth-century Scandinavian coinage.
