Obverse description Facing bust of Emperor Justinian I in imperial regalia, rendered in a stylized Byzantine manner typical of small copper coinage of the period. The portrait, heavily worn on this example, occupies the central field of the flan. The surrounding legend reads D N IVSTINIANVS P P AVG, identifying the emperor as Dominus Noster Justinianus Perpetuus Augustus. The die work reflects the provincial style associated with the Thessalonica mint, with a broad, irregular flan characteristic of hammered Byzantine nummi.
