Obverse description Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Justinian I facing right, depicted in the late Roman imperial tradition. The effigy shows the emperor in military attire with a pearl diadem, rendered in low relief typical of Byzantine hammered coinage. The surrounding legend reads D N IVSTINIANVS P P AVG, distributed around the bust in the field. The die work is characteristic of the Thessalonica mint, with somewhat irregular flan preparation common to this denomination. The overall style reflects the transitional artistic conventions of early Byzantine numismatic portraiture.
