This piece commemorates the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mactan, where Ferdinand Magellan was killed by Lapulapu's forces on April 27, 1521 — the moment that ended the first circumnavigation of the globe before it was completed, forcing the surviving crew under Elcano to finish the voyage without him.
