This piece commemorates the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mactan, where Ferdinand Magellan was killed by Lapulapu's forces on April 27, 1521 — the moment that ended the first circumnavigation of the globe before it was completed, forcing the surviving crew under Elcano to finish the voyage without him. Portugal's Casa da Moeda issuing this coin carries a quiet irony: Magellan had renounced his Portuguese citizenship to sail under the Spanish crown, making him a figure claimed awkwardly by both nations' histories.
