| Obverse description | The obverse features an artistic, highly stylized relief rendering of the map of Portugal in matte finish against a polished field, evoking the contours of the Iberian coastline emerging from cloud-like forms. The design is the work of engraver Carlos Nogueira, whose name appears inscribed vertically along the right side of the field. The legend PORTUGAL 7,5 € is inscribed along the lower portion of the coin, flanked by the date 2022 to the right and a small Portuguese shield mintmark. The mint name CASA DA MOEDA appears in small lettering at the lower left, completing the inscription. |

Issued to mark the centenary of Saramago's birth, this is one of several denominations Casa da Moeda struck in the commemorative series honoring Portugal's only Nobel laureate in literature, who won the prize in 1998 despite the Portuguese government's open hostility toward him at the time — officials had attempted to withdraw his novel O Evangelho segundo Jesus Cristo from a European literary prize on grounds of offending Catholic sensibility, an incident that prompted Saramago to leave Portugal for Lanzarote, where he remained until his death in 2010.
