The Saxonia, built by Henschel & Sohn in 1838, was one of the earliest German steam locomotives and helped inaugurate the Leipzig–Dresden line — the first long-distance railway in the German states. North Korea's decision to feature it reflects the country's longstanding tradition of issuing collector coinage themed around foreign transportation history, a series that has filled gaps in hard currency earnings since the 1970s through sales to Western and Chinese numismatic markets.
