North Korea has issued commemorative silver in volume since the 1980s, almost entirely for export — these coins never circulated domestically and were sold through European dealers to foreign collectors. The Hudson piece belongs to a broader series marking explorers and navigators, produced under contract arrangements that kept Pyongyang's hard-currency earnings off the books of normal trade accounting.

Hudson's 1609 voyage aboard the Halve Maen was funded by the Dutch East India Company, which wanted a northeast passage to Asia. He found the river that bears his name instead.
