Additional information

Joseph II co-ruled with his mother Maria Theresa from 1765 until her death in 1780, a partnership marked by persistent disagreement over monetary reform. The 7 Kreuzer denomination was itself a compromise denomination — awkward enough that it was abandoned shortly after Joseph assumed sole rule, replaced by a rationalized coinage system he had been pushing for years.

Billon coins of this type circulated hard in the Habsburg hereditary lands and saw extensive use in the Bohemian and Austrian markets where small silver fractions were in chronic short supply.
