Obverse description Highly detailed effigy of Wotan (the Germanic deity), depicted as a bearded wild man in right-facing three-quarter bust, wearing a broad-brimmed hat with a long flowing beard rendered with exceptional sculptural relief. The name WOTAN appears incuse on a ribbon in the right field. The encircling border is decorated with a foliate wreath motif, interrupted at the top by a banner bearing the legend THALE • HARZ and at the bottom by a banner inscribed DOPPEL • THALER. The date 1923 appears in the lower field beneath the portrait.
