Fribourg's six-ducat pieces from this period were prestige emissions — multiples struck not for everyday commerce but for presentation, diplomatic gifts, or treasury reserves. The city had only recently consolidated its position within the Swiss Confederation following the upheavals of the Burgundian Wars, and large gold issues of this kind functioned partly as declarations of civic solvency. Fr#240 is among the rarer multiples of the type; surviving examples in any condition are infrequently encountered at auction.
The .986 fineness slightly exceeds the Venetian ducat standard the denomination name implies.
