Miklós Zrínyi — poet, military theorist, and Ban of Croatia — died in a hunting accident in 1664 under circumstances suspicious enough that contemporaries openly speculated about Habsburg involvement. He had spent years arguing that Hungary could expel the Ottomans through its own military strength rather than dependence on Vienna, a position that made him inconvenient to the imperial court. His death came just weeks after he had been discussed as a potential leader of a broader anti-Ottoman campaign.
This issue marks the 394th anniversary of his birth in 1620.
