Hungary's great bustard (*Otis tarda*) population had collapsed so severely by the late twentieth century that the species was effectively a conservation emergency on the Hungarian plain. The 1994 issue was part of a broader Magyar Nemzeti Bank wildlife series timed to coincide with active international protection efforts for the bird, whose last significant European strongholds included the Kiskunság region.
The .584 fineness is characteristic of Hungarian commemorative gold of this period — a deliberate departure from the .900 standard common elsewhere, keeping bullion costs down while retaining legal tender status.
