Hungary's National Bank issued this piece to mark the UNESCO World Heritage listing of Pécs's early Christian burial complex, a site containing fourth-century painted burial chambers that rank among the most significant late Roman funerary monuments north of the Alps. The catacombs were constructed when Pécs — then Sopianae — served as the capital of the Roman province of Valeria, and the painted tomb chambers survived largely because they were sealed and forgotten for centuries before systematic excavation began in the 1970s.
The Adamo EM193 reference places this firmly within Hungary's commemorative silver program that intensified following the country's approaching EU accession in 2004.
