Kumari Jatra is the chariot festival at the heart of Indra Jatra, Kathmandu's largest annual celebration, during which the living goddess — a prepubescent girl selected through rigorous ritual examination — is paraded through the old city. The festival carries particular political weight: tradition holds that any ruler who does not receive the Kumari's tika blessing will die or lose power within the year. Gyanendra, who had assumed direct control of government in 2005, was the last king to participate before the monarchy was abolished by the Constituent Assembly in May 2008.
