| Obverse description | Central field displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms, comprising the quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross) and the bordure of castles, all surmounted by a fleur-de-lis-adorned royal crown. The shield is rendered in the late medieval heraldic style typical of Manueline and post-Manueline Portuguese coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, separated from the shield by an inner beaded border. The overall composition is characteristic of hammered gold coinage of the late sixteenth-century Lisbon mint. |
