| Reverse description | The central field displays a large cross of the Order of Christ (Cruz de Cristo), with flared or recessed arms set within a plain inner circle, rendered in bold relief characteristic of hammered Portuguese gold coinage. This cross was the emblematic device of the Portuguese monarchy and its overseas conquests. The surrounding circular Latin legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES — 'In this sign thou shalt conquer' — references the Constantinian motto adopted by the Portuguese Crown, emphasizing its crusading and imperial ambitions. The flan is irregular and shows typical surface irregularities associated with hand-struck gold issues of the late sixteenth century. |
