Madero, Venustiano Carranza, and Francisco 'Pancho' Villa, their names inscribed below in small lettering reading 'ZAPATA MADERO CARRANZA VILLA'. Behind the portraits rises a rendering of the Monument to the Revolution (Monumento a la Revolución) in Mexico City. Issued to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution of 1910, this coin was struck at a moment when Mexico was in the grip of a severe debt crisis — the government had defaulted on its external debt in 1982, and the peso was in freefall. Releasing a high-grade silver commemorative while the circulating currency collapsed around it was a pointed contradiction.
The 1985 Mexico City earthquake struck just months after this coin's release, killing thousands and further destabilizing an already fractured economy. Mintage figures for the series were affected by the disruption to government operations that followed.
