Beschrijving voorzijde The national arms of the People's Republic of Mozambique are centrally positioned in the field, rendered in fine relief and depicting the emblematic shield with a book, hoe, and AK-47 rifle over a rising sun and ocean waves, surmounted by a five-pointed star. A circular legend in raised Latin lettering reads 'REPUBLICA POPULAR DE MOÇAMBIQUE' around the upper periphery. The denomination '500 METICAIS' is inscribed in two lines across the lower field in bold raised numerals and lettering, separated from the arms by a clean exergual line.

Aanvullende informatie

Mozambique's 1989 wildlife series was issued partly as a hard-currency earner during a period when the country was still deep in civil war — the RENAMO conflict had devastated the domestic economy, and commemorative silver issues exported abroad were among the few reliable sources of foreign exchange. The Moorish idol, native to Indo-Pacific reefs including those off the Mozambican coast, was a deliberate choice to signal the country's marine resources to an international audience.
