Obverse description Within the aluminium bronze centre, the crowned coat of arms of San Marino is depicted, showing the three towers of Mount Titano on a shield surmounted by a mural crown, with a crossed olive and oak sprig below. The stainless steel outer ring bears the legend REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO arcing along the upper periphery, with the motto LIBERTAS inscribed at the base. The design is rendered in a clean, modern relief style characteristic of Italian mint production of the period.

Reverse description The aluminium bronze centre features an expressionist allegorical composition by sculptor Agenore Fabbri, depicting three horse-like figures rearing upward and emitting radiation or toxic breath downward upon two prostrate human figures below, symbolising the existential threat of nuclear war and the inescapable apocalyptic fate imposed upon humanity. The imagery is rendered in a bold, expressive sculptural style consistent with Fabbri's artistic idiom. The stainless steel outer ring carries the date 1983 at the top and the denomination 500 at the bottom, with the engraver's signature A.FABBRI and the Rome mint mark R in the legend.
