Additional information

San Marino issued this coin during the centenary year of Giuseppe Garibaldi's death, marking the hundredth anniversary of his passing on June 2, 1882, at Caprera. Garibaldi had a direct connection to the republic — he visited San Marino in August 1849 during his desperate retreat after the fall of the Roman Republic, using its territory as a brief refuge before Austrian forces closed in. The republic's willingness to shelter him at considerable political risk was not forgotten.
