Suriname gained independence from the Netherlands on November 25, 1975, but the road to 1990 was anything but stable — the country endured a military coup in 1980 under Dési Bouterse, a counter-coup attempt, and the brutal December Murders of 1982, in which fifteen prominent critics of the regime were executed at Fort Zeelandia. This commemorative was struck against that backdrop, as Suriname was only beginning to transition back toward civilian rule following elections in 1987.
