Cameroon's "Santa Claus" 500 Francs belongs to a sprawling category of Central African CFA issues produced almost entirely for the novelty collector market rather than domestic circulation. The BEAC — Banque des États de l'Afrique Centrale — licenses these themed strikes through intermediaries, and the resulting coins rarely if ever reach Cameroonian commerce. KM#456 is one of dozens of such issues from this period, collectively raising legitimate questions about the line between coin and medallion.
